Unit responsible for sunk USS Meredith and HMS Boadicea
Hi
I`m looking for Luftwaffe unit(s) responsible for sunk two allied destroyers (USS Meredith on 9th June, and HMS Boadicea on 13 th June 1944) during Normandy campain. Both ships was lost due to Hs 293 guided missiles attacks, so I think that Do 217s equipped III./KG 100 was responsible for that. Anyone can confirm that thought ? |

Re: Unit responsible for sunk USS Meredith and HMS Boadicea
Well Meredith was crippled by a mine on 7 June and then hit by a bomb in the morning of the 9th (dropped by a He177 according to a website).
All my sources (books) agree that the HMS Boadicea was sunk by 2 torpedoes, not by Hs 293 glider bombs. 63 German bombers operated against Allied ships during the night of 8th-9th but I have no other details. During the night of the 12th-13th, at least 131 German bombers flew against the Allied ships and the beachhead. Both the Ju 88 of KG 54 and the Do 217 of III./KG 100 claimed some hits, but I know no more details. The III./KG 26 lost two torpedo-carrying Ju 88 during the night. |

Do 217s of KG 100 and He 177s of KG 40 were launching HS 293s during the invasion

Thanks for answer.
My info about Hs 293 come from web page ( http://www.ausairpower.net/Warship-Hits.html ), but books are more accuratte, I think. |

A detailed account of the Meredith's loss by her captain is here:
http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/...-Knuepfer.html My information on Boadicea is that she was torpedoed off Portland Bill. |
