Re: 84 Squadron USAAF June 6th 1944

The 84th Fighter Squadron was part of the 78th Fighter Group. There is a description here of the 78th Fighter Group's actions on June 6 here (search for 78th). The section is called Big Stud which describes some attacks on trains on that day.

Re: 84 Squadron USAAF June 6th 1944

Combat reports for 1943 / 45 but not 1944 yet:

http://www.ulongbeach.com/78th_MCAR_Homepage.html

June 6--
Cherbourg (2) Invasion support, H4787 fighter-bomber (Mayenne?), Alencon M/Y fighter-bomber, Rouen fighter-bomber.
Massa was Col. Gray's wingman (killed June 10th, a really bad day for the Group) and Gray flew with the 83FS.
The missions were logged as "Fullhouse", "Royal Flush" and "Stud" , gambling references.

Thanks the 84th. may have been strafing rail lines in the Chaillone area ( N. of Alencon) as mentioned in Garry Fry's History; Lt. Hailey was hit by debris and bailed out in the Channel. Most likely 43-25578 WZ-F.

Can not find a 'Chaillone' but there is Chailloue 5km north of Sees and the rail line from Sees has a large triangular meeting of tracks just west of Chailloue.
