A sign on PR Mosquito

Hi,

I prepare an article and colour profile of a Mosquito NS502 of the 544 Sqn used by Czechoslovak airmen too. Two of several original pictures show uncertain sign on port side / nose.
Did anybody further search of this machine and nose art or was in contact with a member of Squadron in 1944-45 please ?
Any comments much appreciated.

Regards,
Michal

Re: A sign on PR Mosquito

It certainly looks like some sort of writing, and not a tear in the picture or anything. I'll have a look in my PR-books but I can't recall having seen anything like this.

Hi.
Unfortunately you cut the fin off.
Does it have Barber stripes.??
60 sqn SAAF all had names on their noses. Some of them looks like that.
I don't know the history of the serial no but if it was with them before it may still be the name on it.
60 sqn also had the D-Day stripes on all the the time,so if I can see the fin I can see if it was 60 sqn.
680 RAF sqn had Barber stripes only on the fin but not rudder.

Hi,

atckyrre - I welcome your look into PR books.
Stefaan - Mossie was without Red and White recognition stripes. According to my info she was delivered to the 544 Sqn on 23rd May 1944 where was used till 1945. But it (occasionally) operated / landed in San Severo like No.2 PRU with 60 sqn SAAF too. There might have been a point of inspiration from your crew there. What kind of names had they ?

Re: A sign on PR Mosquito

They all had female names on them, often just scribbled in white.
That writing looks suspicious like a 60 sqn name.
60 sqn was at San Severo but I'll have to find a report that had that serial no.
Photo's of 60 sqn Mossies are rare this side..
Can you scan that bigger and send it to me offline??

Re: A sign on PR Mosquito

Hello Stefaan,

The Osprey book shows three photos and a left side colour profile.

They all show that the a/c did not have Barber tail stripes. That is not to say she did not have them at a later date. p0ost the photo shoot.

Addition at the time she is a/c "M".

All the best.

Alex
