Seigfried Freytag details..

Hi Guys, with another image surfacing recently, I was wondering whether anyone could provide marking details for the aircraft of Seigfried Freytag, as so far I am only aware of (now) 2 shots that show only the tail and rudder sporting 57 victory markings on a Bf109F4? Now after arriving in the Meditteranean theatre at some stage their would have been a change to the G2, correct, would the rudder have been transfered to his new mount? The initial first shot was of the rudder only, removed from his aircraft I assume?
Could this be a case for transfer or possibly just damage repair?

Hoping someone can help.

Regards Wayne

Re: Seigfried Freytag details..

Hi,
Were Major Seigfried Freytag and Oberleutnant Heinz Bär in the same unit?
The marks and the emblem in the rudder are identical in the two a/c, only changing the 40 for 100. Heinz Bär also used a F-4 in Meditteranean. It must probably have been a Bf 109F-4.
I don't have any image of that aircraft.

Re: Seigfried Freytag details..

Hello, yes Freytag '40' and Bar '100' were in the same unit, JG77, 2 other pilots carried a similar wreath marking as well, Major Gordon Gollob '100' and Oblt. Fredrich Geisshardt '80'. I don't know of any others, it would be safe to assume the same JG77 artist did all four wreath markings.
There are quite a number of photo's of Bar's F-4 wreath marking around now.

Re: Seigfried Freytag details..

concerning Freytag, I've recently read that he volonteered in the French foreign Legion after the war. He was involved in Indochina conflict, and refused to be promoted. He pasted away in 2005.
do you know more details about this period ?

Regards
Philippe

Re: Seigfried Freytag details..

Hello,

Oblt. Siegfried Freytag was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1./JG 77 on 27 June 1942 and relocated with the unit from Russia to the Mediterranean theatre.
On 13 March 1943 was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II/JG 77.
I don’t have infos about the date of his promotion to Hauptmann which was usual in such situations.

Hptm. Heinz Bär was Gruppenkommandeur of I/JG 77 from 11 May 1942 to 6 August 1943.
Promoted to Major on 28 March 1943.

Answer for Your question, Brettas – Yes, they were flying in the same unit; Bär was commander of Freytag for over 8 months.

Freytag survived WW II only to discover that all his family and friends had perished. Joined the French Foreign Legion as a regular infantry soldier and fought in Indochina as a humble infantryman.
He died on 1 June 2003 in French Foreign Legion retirement home.

I'd like to know more about this period of his life also.

Regards

Nef
