Re: 1 SAAF SQN Claims ?

Cheers Brian

Had a bit of a hungover when I posted this but I have Mr Shores TOE and you have Lt SJ Richards claims for 2 Bf109G's on the 4-4-44 in the book TOE its down as the 8-4-44, which is right ? also Lufwaffe records says that two 109's were lost, do you know which recon unit they came from ?
NAGr 12 ?

Merry Christmas

David

Re: 1 SAAF SQN Claims ?

Fw 190 on 19 March: I have no losses from I. or II./SG 4 although the MATAF Ops summary for the day says: "DAF: 94 Spits [i.e. total sorties] 7th Wing … near Ortona intercepted 4 Fws and destroyed one."

2./NAG 11 lost two Bf 109 G-6s on 8 April 1944.

There were Me 410s lost from 2.(F)/122 on 14 March and 2, 12 and 15 April.

7./JG 53 lost a Bf 109 G-6 on 12 April

Re: 1 SAAF SQN Claims ?

Hi David.
On 4/4/44 de Jong and Ash Homer of 1 sqn intersepted 2 109's but could not bring them down.
On 8/4/44 SJ Richards and Newton Thompson intersepted 2 109's and SJ Richards shot down both.
The 1st dived into the sea and the 2nd crossed over the Italian coast near Pescarra and was shot down up a valley near there. The pilot baled
out.Do you know which unit and who the pilots were from the German's side.

Re: 1 SAAF SQN Claims ?

Hi Stefaan

I thought the 109's may have come from NAGr 12 but this combat was with 73 Sqn on the 7-4-44, so it was prob with NAGr11 and Nick Beale may have more info on this. I will reply to your message when I get back next year, BTW did you get my e-mail about 5 SAAF Sqn ORB 44-45 I think its was some time ago when I sent it.

Regards

David

Not much, David but 2./NAG 12 did record a Bf 109 lost in air combat on 7 April. The location is "Rvarski-Kanal" which I'm guessing would be Yugoslavia.

Hi,
What do you mean by Shores TOE and BTW in the above emails. Maybe we need a sticky on abreviations in emails so we all know what you are talking about.
