FAA casualties 1940

Hi guys

Most books/accounts that I have read show that the crew of Swordfish K8380 of 812 Squadron, lost on 24 May 1940 - namely Lts Gurr and Carpmael - were killed, but their names do not appear on CWGC. Were they captured? Any information please.

Cheers
Brian

Leendert will become famous soon enough
Re: FAA casualties 1940

Brian,

Look again: both are on CWGC. They're buried at Oye-Plage Communal Cemetery, France.

Ronald Carpmael and Kenneth Percy Gurr, 24/05/1940, Royal Navy.

Regards,

Leendert

Re: FAA casualties 1940

you may of been looking for them under the RAF, for the FAA you need to look under RN

(took me awhile to work that out for myself)

Re: FAA casualties 1940

According to Peter D. Cornwell in 'The Battle of France then and now', page 356, they belonged to 825 Squadron. Other sources state 812 Squadron. Can anyone enlighten me to which Squadron they really belonged?

Regards,

Bart

Re: FAA casualties 1940

Hi All
http://www.naval-history.net/xDKCas1940-05MAY.htm has them as based at N Coates and lost in Air operations. The Sqn given is 812 but for some reason it is labelled as RAF which might reflect their duties at the time. Scroll to 24/5/40 and there is also an 825 Sqn loss on the same day but with different names
Regards
Dick
