Two other similar photos of this incident is published in "Die Jagdfliegerverbande der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1934 bis 1945, Teil 8/II", page 92, Jochen Prien et al.

Here captioned as being a Bf 109 F-4/Z, Black 10, W.Nr.7343, 5./JG 53, which on 14 February 1942 crashed into a parked KG 77 Do 17 communications ac. The pilot of the Bf 109, Uffz. Gerhard Kitzenmaier, was injured.

Searching for this info, I also realized that two other JG 53 photos on the next page (P. 93) in this publication also have been up for sales at ebay not that long ago.

Black 11+ - of II Gruppe, a F-4/Z of 5./JG 53 belly landed in front of a hangar building.(Probably Sicily?)
Yellow 4+ - of 6./JG 53, a F-4 being run up by a mechanic in the cockpit.

I have seen a few other photos of this or a similarily equipped Bf 110 in Norway (where this photo was taken - the caption is right for once!). It seems to be a field modification to extend the useful range of the type when flying from Vaernes to the Narvik area in April-early June 1940.

I haven't checked the litterature but I can't remember having seen an official designation for this particular arrangment.

Regards,

Kjetil Åkra

P.S: Thanks again, Ed West, for continuing to post these lists. Rarely have someone done so much for research to the benefit for so many!

Re: Photos 5-19

You're welcome everyone. The Bf-110 with the fuselage tank was an unusual sight. I don't know if it could be dropped in this configuration.

Ed

Re: Photos 5-19

RT, if you are referring to this photo:

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=230131723618

I suspect they may be aerial mines. They don't appear to be droptanks. Or perhaps they are transport pods?

Re: Photos 5-19

Kjetil,
In the latest Jet & Prop Foto Archiv, Band 13, there is a photo giving a closer look at this tank. Captioned as taken at Stavanger in April 1940, the Bf 110 belonging to I/ZG 76.

Thanks for that info, F19Gladiator. I have heard good things about the lastest Foto Archiv band, I should probably get it!

They are the 1000kg supply containers, usually visible under Ju 88 and He 111...
