3(F)./122

19 January 1942 (east of Whitby)
Aircraft: Junkers 88A-5 F6+PL w/nr. 440 3(F)./122
Crew: Uffz Franz Fichtinger pilot missing
Fw. Gerhard Drassdo observer missing
Gefr. Hans Blunck wireless/op missing
Gefr. Johann Bauer gunner missing
This aircraft failed to return from operations on 19 January 1942. The Luftwaffe Loss Returns do not give the location or the cause of the loss but TheBlitz, then and now, vol 3 (1990) claims that it crashed in the North Sea some twenty miles east of Whitby at 15.30hours. The Junkers is believed to have been shot down by a Spitfire flown by Squadron Leader Tony Lovell DFC, the newly-appointed Commanding Officer of 145 Squadron, Catterick.

Can anyone add to this?
