Re: Me-109 Wnr 16103 JG 26

Gentlemen,

based on what information I have I can probably add the following to the background of this loss:

At 16.30 hrs. on February 10th, 1943, a Rotte from 11./JG 26 took off to reconnoitre the English coast between Margate and Dover. At a point 5 km east of Deal they were bounced by two Typhoon of 609 Sqn. which were on a defensive patrol over the coast. The two British fighters gave chase after the two fleeing Messerschmitt inspite of heavy rain and an overcast that went down to almost see level. Shortly before reaching the French coast they hit the Bf 109 here in question which crashed into the sea 2 km off the coast between Calais and Cap Gris Nez, killing the pilot, whereas the othe Messerschmitt returned safely.

Hope this helps

Regards

Jochen Prien
