Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
I wonder if the first picture is of one of the "blue" Ju 88s at Foggia, similar to the one that landed in Switzerland. Much debate about the color, Michael Ullmann has come up with documentation about the use of Farbton 83 and it being a dark blue. The aircraft at Foggia, and their odd scheme, is also discussed by Merrick in column 2 of page 326 in Vol. 2 of Luftwaffe Camouflage and Markings 1933-1945, Classic Publications, 2005.
This is the aircraft that landed in Switzerland, with note from a source I do not recall. WNr.550396 Ju88A-4 (ATG Leipzig) TK+SF / B3+MH. this Ju88A-4 that flew with 1./KG54? and landed in Dübendorf Switzerland on 21 Oct, 1943 after the crew had lost their bearings. The aircraft was painted water-blue (unknown hue) on its upper surfaces throughout, upon which a wave-type pattern (sand yellow Nr.79) had been sprayed. The lower surfaces bore black night camouflage. The standard-size original Balkenkreutze were painted over probably with the same special type of camouflage and replaced by small crosses on fuselage and wings, outlined in white. The small Geschwader code “B3” was ahead of the Balkenkreutz and call and squadron letter were in standard size, being repeated on the flame suppressor tubes over the exhausts on both engines. The original black swastika with the black border was kept on the rudder but integrated into the wave pattern. The Geschwader emblem (a small coat of arms) appeared on both sides of the note.”

Re: Post # 1687
Thank you Rudi for these fine photos. I have been studying this aircraft (AM52) for years, but must admit I have dropped the ball lately and been away for some time. The A/C was shipped in 1947 from RCAF Rockcliffe in Ontario to RCAF Downsview. In 1948 it was displayed once at RCAF Air Force Day at the Staff College in Toronto then again at the Canadian National Exhibition, Toronto in August 1948. Information regarding transit from UK to Canada and RCAF stations was obtained by researcher Lee Walsh from documents at the National Archives in Canada. Along with the A/C 7 Jumo 004 engines were shipped from UK for testing purposes at the National Research Council. None of the A/C were to be considered to be made airworthy and only for study and demonstration purposes. It's ultimate fate and Wk Nr still to be positively determined. Best Regards and thanks once again for these fine photos. Vince... |
