Re: RAF Losses above Belgium betw.May 10 and May 28,1940.
Thank you, Chris and Pieter!
I forwarded your information already to Frans. He'll be satisfied. I've got already another question from him: on May 14th 1940, a French plane made probably a forced landing in Maastricht (hit by Flak?). The plane was a AMIOT 354 nr. 30. Who were the members of the crew and what happened exactly? Thanks in advance! Fred ps: Pieter, you know how you can reach Frans directly I think? If not, give me a sign. |

Re: RAF Losses above Belgium betw.May 10 and May 28,1940.
Fred,
According to my sources it was Amiot354 No34 (not 30). It was hit during a recon of the situation around Maastricht, but almost certainly crashed in France, because they returned to their unit already the next day. I don't have the full crew, but on board was the commander of the Groupement de Bombardement No9, colonel Francois. Pieter |

Re: RAF Losses above Belgium betw.May 10 and May 28,1940.
Hi,
10-5-1940 Re 87 Sqn could be Voase Jeff or Saunders. First in early am at Doncourt second in post noon. But L1779 was an 85 Sqn a/c pilot was Lee. L1979 was shot down on the 11th not the 10th, near Hazebrouck by 109's pilot Hemingway a/c letter either "X" or "Y" dont know if code "VY" used. Again re N2454, this was lost on the 13th not the 10th at Hergene and abandoned upon evacuation according to Air Brits L1000-N9999. Re Deere's a/c from his book Nine lives he recalls seeing the "Kiwi" motif being eaten up in the flames. Alex |

Re: RAF Losses above Belgium betw.May 10 and May 28,1940.
Hi Alex,
I'm confused now. Regarding the N2454 you refer to this one as the machine of Sqn Ldr Tomlinson, that made an emergency landing at Hingene (not Hergene) in Belgium on May 11 after fights over Dordrecht. However, according 12 Days in May Tomlinson was flying N2547. Who is right or which is the other plane? Pieter |

Re: RAF Losses above Belgium betw.May 10 and May 28,1940.
Hello Pieter,
Re I'm confused. I know that I am, where did you see that I refered to N2454 as the a/c that S/L Tomlinson used on the 11th May ? I quote what I said "re N2454, this was lost on the 13th not the 10th at Hergene (Spelt this way in book)and abandoned upon evacuation according to Air Brits L1000-N9999." No memtion of Tomlinson there. Now, as for N2454 Air Britain series L1000 - N9999 Page 130 N2454 17 Damaged by Bf109's and Force-landed, Hergene,(Again spelt this way in book) Belgium, 13.5.40; abandoned on evacuation. Abandoned. 12 Days in May No mention of N2454 As for Sqn Ldr George C. Tomlinson FCL vol 1 page 19 11th May 1940 17 Sqn Hurricane I N2547 Pilot:S/Ldr G.C.Tomlinson Fate: Safe Patrol. Re: RAF Losses above Belgium betw.May 10 and May 28,1940.
Hi Alex,
Apologies for misinterpreting your comments! Your details on Sqn Ldr Tomlinson's landing on May 11 are all correct, except for the location which was I mentioned Hingene (at that moment occupied by the belgian escadrille 1/I/1, see e.g. Avions HS18 by Peter Taghon, p12). So that was the N2547. Remaining question is then where this N2454 comes from. I don't have any sources mentioning No 17 Sqn activities over Belgium before May 17, when this squadron also started to participate in the daily channel crossing scheme of RAF squadrons (see 12 Days in May). And of course the emergency landing of Tomlinson on May 11. So a crash in Belgium would be strange and/or new information. My conclusion: there is at least a certain degree of mix-up of this N2454 and the landing of Tomlinson's N2457 at Hingene. There is no other report of a Hurricane landing at Hingene, and 2 of these landings happening at Hingene would be a large coincidence. Still, does not explain what happened to the N2454. Who has details? Pieter |
