Uffz. Leander Mayer III./JG51

Looking for info on this pilot. Particularly the Bf 109E he flew when shooting down a Hurricane over Dover 19 July 1940. Can anyone help?

Regards,

Paul.

Re: Uffz. Leander Mayer III./JG51

There is no such person but there is an Uffz Maximilian Mayerl of 8/JG 51 who claimed a Spitfire 10 km south of Dover 1352 hrs (his 2nd kill of 76). As to what mark of Bf 109 E he was flying or its markings, I cannot help

Re: Uffz. Leander Mayer III./JG51

Following on from Chris the JG 51 book shows Hpt. Maximilian Mayerl with 76 victories all with III/JG51 (7 in the West) awarded RK and survived the war.
RK site has Oblt. Mayerl of 9/51 awarded RK 22-11-43.

Maximilian Mayerl

Hello Paul

I can not add much more than Chris and Brian already have but in case that you might be interested here is what I have on Mayerl. I hope that you find it somewhat useful. http://rapidshare.com/files/202854934/Mayerl.zip.html

Horrido!

Re: Uffz. Leander Mayer III./JG51

Guys,

Many thanks for your posts. Just goes to show that you can't believe everything you read when researching!!! The attached pic is of a text extract taken from the book Hurricane Aces 1939-40 by Tony Holmes which is where I first picked up the name Mayer (just zoom to read the text). Further research threw up the name Leander.

Extract from http://www.luftwaffe.cz/jg51claims.pdf

19.7.1940 16:25 Uffz. Mayer Leander Hurricane III./JG 51 32 Sq., Sgt. Turner ,Dover

Regards,

Paul.

Re: Uffz. Leander Mayer III./JG51

Actually there was such a person, but he certainly was not flying in combat with JG 51 in 1940. His first claim was as a Flg. at the end of July-1941.

Fw 190A-3, 7013, Mayer, Uffz. Leander, 12, 8., JG 51, schwarze, 9 + |, DF+BH, , 29-Jan-43, MIA after Luftkampf with Il-2s., WNr. listed as 013. Kassel factory, Ostfront, Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #8)-Vol.14; Prien, et al, Die Jagdfliegerverbände, IX.2, p.338; Ring, JG 51 loss list, p.49, , 7km nördlich Dolgoje, 100%, F, ,

And I should note because when I usually post these extracts delimited by commas from my database with no editing - 7013 is the WNr, of the machine, 12 refers to his claims, he flew with 8./JG 51, the plane was coded 'black 9 + |' which would mean a III./JG 51, 8th Staffel machine. The 'DF+BH' was the Stammkennzeichen of the machine, date, fate, comments, sources, location, percent loss & 'F', Feindflug - operational sortie.
