Bf 110 C or D?
Any idea what model of the Bf 110 was WNr. 3170?
I suspect it was a D-1/R1 with the "Dackelbauch", but can't prove it. BTW, this a/c was flown by Leo Schuhmacher of 2./ZG 76 in August 1940. Thanks in advance. Chris |

Re: Bf 110 C or D?
Chris
Depending on what you call proof, I can quote from Mankau/Petrick's book stating that WNr 3170 was a D-0 built by Messerschmitt in April/May 1940. If your request is harder than that, I hope someone with more relevant sources can help you.... ![]() Cheers Stig |

Re: Bf 110 C or D?
Stig, why shouldn't I trust you?
Thanks for your answer. Do you think it might have been fitted with the "Dackelbauch" for the mission of the 15 August 1940? I intend to have a colour profile made of this aircraft - using some kind of educated guess. Chris |

Re: Bf 110 C or D?
Hi.
It was listed as a D-0 when lost in Litza bay with I./JG 77 in December 1941: http://www.aviationhistory.no/ref_db...?lossid=111506 Not unlikely that it was equipped with a Dackelbauch on August 15 1940 Regards, Andreas

Re: Bf 110 C or D?
Hi Chris
Sorry about late reply, but I have had the pleasure ( ) of being one of the handy men when our company moved to new premises this weekend.Trust and proof is not quite the same thing, at least to me, but thanks anyway! Always nice to know someone believes you....With regard to "your D-0" having a Dackelbauch or not, I would say yes it did unless it had been modified not to. I have no proof of course, but I have always believed that the whole D-0 series was either built with or at least intended to carry this contraption which,in the end, proved to be somewhat less successful than intended.... John Vasco is of course immensely much more qualified than me to make a statement, but in his absence, I stick my neck out.... Cheers Stig |

Re: Bf 110 C or D?
I have this picture from EBAY last year.
It has W.Nr. 3170 and +HK (M8+HK). Hope it helps. Rudolph, Denmark |

Re: Bf 110 C or D?
Hi.
The aircraft had an accident while with II./N.J.G 1, between it being used by ZG 76 and (Z)/JG 77. http://www.aviationhistory.no/ref_db...?lossid=114810 I guess it would have been modified for use as a nightfighter and then again before transfer to the Zerstörer in the north - probably resembling a C series aircraft by then. I would also guess that it had improved engines by then. Regards, Andreas B

Re: Bf 110 C or D?
Dear Rudolph,
I do agree with Andreas and that means that your filename for that interesting photo of 3170 is not correct. To put it in other words: 'HK' was not referring to 2./NJG 1 but to 2./ZG 76' The accident referred to by Andreas occured on Deelen airfield, another fact supporting the fact that 3170 once belonged to the II./NJG 1 (and must have had a Vkz. of G9+?C, G9+?M, G9+?N or G9+?P) All the best, Marcel
