Wilhelm Moritz in II./JG 3 in 1943

Hello all,

Who can please provide more details on Wilhelm Moritz relating to his time in II./JG 3 in 1943..?

Available data is conflicting. Various sources state that he was appointed Staffelkapitän of 6./JG 3 on 19 Oct 43. But after Hptm Stolte, Staffelkapitän of this very unit did not return on 18 Oct 43, Hptm Heinrich Sannemann was appointed as leader of this Staffel and not Moritz.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,
Rob

Rob

Prien does not list Moritz in any command position within JG 3 until he becomes Kommandeur of IV./JG 3. He lists him as coming from the Stab.

Cheers

Re: Wilhelm Moritz in II./JG 3 in 1943

Hello Stig,

Thank you for your reply.

In JFV, Teil 10/II, page 293 Prien does state victories by Hauptmann Wilhelm Moritz:

7 Nov 43: 6./JG 3, P-47 8 km north of Eindhoven at 11.30 hours **
30 Nov 43: 6./JG 3, B-17 at 11.45 hours

** 56 FG/63FS lost F/O Sheehan on 7 Nov 43 at 11.30 hours over Doesburg (not far away from Eindhoven). Sheehan evaded.

Moritz might have been transfered to 6./JG 3 as Staffelführer instead of Staffelkapitän.

Best regards,
Rob

Re: Wilhelm Moritz in II./JG 3 in 1943

Sure Rob

I have not gone through Moritz victory list. Didn't say he never served in II./JG 3. All I am saying is that Prien does not list him in any command position within that Gruppe.

As you say he may have been the Staffelführer in the air from time to time, but that is something I don't know.

Cheers
Stig
