KG III/355

Hi,

Not being very clued up on Luftwaffe paperwork, I have a document which came with a German flying helmet which I think is some sort of training flight (it is a 'flugaustrag nr.'). It is dated 26/06/1939, the aircraft is a HeIII 55 0 37 and it is from Kampsgeschwader III/355.

Can anyone tell me what KG III/355 was or did, googling has got me nowhere.

Many thanks in advance,

Russ

Re: KG III/355

Well, its matter of writing. KG 355 yelded plenty responses whilst 'Giggling', then one can find info on III Gruppen *third Gruppen.

I think "flugaustrag" can indeed be training flight as date is between 'events' when Germany added terretories to its Fatherland, and rest is code for the individual aircraft.

Type be Heinkel He 111 *Arabic, not Roman figures, and code 55+O37 = 55 the fifth Bomber Geschwader (or Gruppen, or assigned unit to that Luftkreis) in Luftkreis 5, the individual letter O *Otto of seventh Staffeln in third Gruppe *they having Gruppe first, then Staffeln.

This later became KG 53, then getting codeA1 and summer 1939 is the time when this was done althoug I do not have exact date for KG 53, as it was not a Ju 88 unit. (55+O37 then theoretically becoming A1+OR )

Explained below.

Re: KG III/355

Ed is correct when put in as KG 355 (Kampfgeschwader or bomber wing in English) there is a good deal of information.

The most direct route for KG 355 and what it became, i.e. KG 53 can viewed on the following site/ link.

http://www.ww2.dk/air/kampf/kg53.htm

Depending on how deep you want to go you can find more but this is a decent starting point.
