Anson crash 18 March 1942 Scotland

Hi guys

Has anyone information on the crash of an Anson at Monkton, Ayrshire on 18 March 1942. Apparently one killed (FAA officer) and four unhurt.

Cheers
Brian

No.3 RS recorded the following in their ORB:

March 17th 1942, “Anson AX230, pilot Captain Harris, R.M., crashes at Monkton Railway Station due to one engine failure. Sub Lt Hogg was seriously injured and died the following day in Ayr Hospital. Lt Going R.N. had one leg broken and Sub Lt Richards and Sgt Rich all suffered shock. With the exception of Sgt Rich, the instructor, these were all pupils on the Observer Radio Course.”

Re: Anson crash 18 March 1942 Scotland

Hi Col and Alan

Thanks for the gen.

Quite a gathering of RN aircrew aboard the Anson. Sub-Lt Angus Hogg DSC+ was one of the FAA's top-scoring fighter pilots. The pilot, Royal Marine Capt Skeets Harris DSC was also a former FAA fighter pilot, while Lt Grubby Going DSO (former Swordfish observer and Taranto veteran), had only one leg to break - he'd lost the other when the carrier Illustrious was bombed at Malta in January 1941. Sub-Lt (D.H.?) Richards may also have been a former fighter pilot.

Cheers
Brian

Just out of curiosity.

What were at least two former fighter pilots doing in an Observer Radio Course?

Cheers
