eBay: one Bf109E.

Hello Gents,

1/ http://www.ebay.de/itm/Altes-orig-Fo...item51b488a93e
2/ http://www.ebay.de/itm/Altes-orig-Fo...item51b488aca2

Never seen this scoreboard: 46 tommies, and only tommies.
Is the plane linked to the fin?
Never seen this machine too. I think about JG 77 but not with that scoreboard...
So what?

Note: there is a "Strich" just before the Chevrons, just under the "S". ???
Note: The guy looks very small, doesn't he?

Thank you for your help and comments.

Regards, Franck.

Re: eBay: one Bf109E.

I believe the scoreboard, whose style says "JG 2" to me, belonged to Siegfried Schnell.

The unusual scribble camouflage on the 109E is intriguing. There was also a different view of the radioman working on this machine. My first thought was also "II/JG 77," but I can claim no logical basis for that. I usually begin a search like this with, "Who can it NOT belong to?"

Hi,

See the photo of Siegfried Schnell's rudder on page 104 of Ries & Obermaier, Luftwaffe Rudder Markings, Schiffer, 1991. The tally looks awfully similar in style and location.

Cheers,
Andrew A.

Andrew, indeed very similar but the 'Nicht anfassen' marking applied to the rudder in the eBay photo is missing from the photo of the Yellow 1+I Bf109F-2 in the book you mention. It is also not visible on his F-4 in the photo below it. Either his rudder had a repaint over the marking or it's another F of his? Or another pilot?

Re: eBay: one Bf109E.

Good morning,

Thank you for your comments Gentlemen.

Siegfried Schnell then, around July 1941... Hence a Bf 109F??? (I haven't the books!)
Seller is selling a Bf 109F front view ... Nothing helpful though.

Do you confirm that Bf 109E photos have nothing to do with Schnell's one?

Regards, Franck.

Franck, the aircraft is an E, note the octane triangle on the top of the fuselage behind the cockpit and no "F" type marking under the cockpit. To me this is a weird scheme. Why go to all the trouble to do extra camouflage, subdued markings including old style narrow white wing crosses and then put this big fuselage cross with wide white bands? An oxymoron!

Hello John,

Seller is offering Four Bf 109 E photos and one Bf 109 F photo.
The displayed score board ( If Schnell) must have been taken in July 1941, in a time JG 2 was supposed to fly with Bf 109 F.

I don't think the Bf 109Es have something to do with that scoreboard; If so, then it's a VERY WEIRD JG 2 camouflage, and Schnell wasn't in Stab Staffel, was he?

Regards, Franck.
