In his auction he didn't wrote that the picture is original and in his assessment profile you can read that one of the buyers retoured his pictures.

It was I who returned the photo, as it was a computer print, not an original one.

Re: ebay: buyers be aware!

Dear All,

Not to defend this guy and his poor copies, but there is another side to this story and that is the use of computer printouts for making copies. The technology has gotten quite good in this area, apparently so much so that one would be hard pressed to find someone to duplicate a photo by the silver halide method.

Actually, when I saw the title of this thread, I thought the alarm was being raised about the hacking of eBay. If you haven't already done so, you need to change your password.

Regards,
Richard

Re: ebay: buyers be aware!

Several sellers are offering modern repros. Some state this explicitly, others use confusing or even misleading terms like "archive" photos or "beleg" photos. No idea what this last german word might mean. Some of the photos you get are clearly new prints, others have been handled in such a way that they look old.

Regards,
Rudi.

Re: ebay: buyers be aware!

"Beleg" in this context signifies "author´s copy" or "specimen copy" which describes the quality of such duplicates. For my understanding it may even be a simple copy of a copy...

Re: ebay: buyers be aware!

Thanks for the warning. I avoid "beleg" photos or those that add another word that suggests the photo is a copy of a copy. It must have the word "original" or "orig." in the title and/or description. Even then, I've seen a few photos that are obvious reprints. On the other hand, I have read that multiple copies of a photo were made at the time to hand out to others as "comrade" copies, or copies were made of a famous pilot or milestone event, again to be shared with the crew or others close to them.

Re: ebay: buyers be aware!

Indeed Ed,

Not every german soldier possessed a photo camera so on many occasions a dozen prints or so were made and distributed among fellows in arms.

Rudi.

Re: ebay: buyers be aware!

"Belegexemplar" may especially be related to propaganda photographs. Apart from his own original negative the photographer keeps the journal or the page of the journal where his pic has been published as "Beleg" (proof) of his work. Depending of where the photograph has been published the quality of such "Belegexemplare" may vary considerably. The private prints of front soldiers are made from the original and are from much better quality.
