Re: P/O Roddan, navigator or pilot???

Hi Danny,

A quick google search led to Samuel John Roddan. With this full name I performed a search in The London Gazette and a Cpl Samuel John Roddan, service number 1126888 was promoted to P/O with service number 199464, effected on 9th August 1945.

Just to be sure if there weren't 2 persons with that name, I also checked the RAF card index of Airmen en Airwomen and it turns out that above mentioned name and servicenumber are unique.

So, as a Cpl he can't have been a wartime pilot/navigator. This is also a non-flying rank, at least in 1945. I suspect he perhaps belonged to ground personnel of a Mosquito unit...?

Regards,
Hans

Re: P/O Roddan, navigator or pilot???

Hello,

Roddan's NCO number was 1128688, not 1126888. His Officer's number was 199466, not 199464. He was a member of the Technical Branch when commissioned.

Thanks all for your help.

I am in the process of tracking down a chap from the Liverpool area with this name, he is was or is well known and was a teacher after the war and reflected how he tipped V1s of their flight balance with his aircraft.

Will keep you informed.

Thanks

Danny
