Thanks Bas for these additional details; one of the Hurricanes was, in all probability, shot down by Hptm. Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein of 9./NJG2.

Hi Bas,
.. a little detail perhaps, but I presume that Shirm was buried at OUDDORP (Zeeland) and not OUDORP (nr. Alkmaar)? Cheers, Theo |

Re: serial numbers of two No. 3 Squadron Hurricane intruder losses 28/29 July 1942?
I have that Gawith's target was the Nordwyk Beacon, 5 miles NW of Leiden. take off 0009 hrs. Shirm took off shortly afterwards. Both came down in the sea, the only one washed ashore being Shirm at Oudorp (one D). One Hurricane was picked up by search-lights over Hulten but ineffective Flak.

Re: serial numbers of two No. 3 Squadron Hurricane intruder losses 28/29 July 1942?
F/S A.J. Shirm has been buried at 6.8.42 (August 6th) at Ouddorp General Cemetery.
So it was Ouddorp, with two D's, a village at Goeree-Overflakkee in South-Holland. Information from the files of the late Jan Hey. These files are based on information from the Red Cross files in The Hague. Jaap Woortman |
