II./JG 53 Moved to Neusiedl in June 1941, But whre is Neusiedl ?
II./JG 53 Moved to Neusiedl on 13 June 1941, But where is Neusiedl ? I can not find a Neusiedl in East Prussia. The only Neusiedl I find is in Austria and there is no logical reason for them to be there. The timing of their move coincides with that of the other groups of JG 53. Any ideas ?

Vielen dank! Aber, the map coordinates take me to an open field 5 km south west of Gusev (Gumbennin, HQ of Fliegerkorps I) where there is a grass airfield on the south side of town with what looks like a hangar. On the other hand Malomoschaiskoje (with a beautiful view of the Baltic Nuclear Power Plant) looks to be the place, but no trace of an airfield. But it accords well with the attached map. It is curious in that it looks as if someone traced it off another map or maybe it is an overlay. The nearby major towns are named but none of the airfields are. I assume it is in error where II./JG53 (next to Ragnit) is marked III./JG53. Last edited by oquaig; 28th July 2017 at 08:48. |

Neusiedel wasn't an regular airfield. The Bf109 stood on a field way under trees and the personal lived in tints. The position of the "airfield" could be here (roundabout ... what I can see from the pictures): 54°55'04.3"N 22°10'59.1"E (Today the former Neusiedel doesn't exit.)

Malomoschaiskoje was the former Budwethen, Neusiedel (after 1945 Moskwino and 1976 assigned to Malomoschaiskoje) was lying in the southwest of Budwethen ... "further north", hmmmmm ...

Paul Thompson's post helps and Lobellen was easy enough to find to the Northeast. But what do you mean "assigned to Malomoschaiskoje" Did it become part of the town or part of the commune administration ? |

It's not my post, it's an online database put together by Larry de Zeng. See sticky thread on this very forum - http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=38203 . Regards, Paul |

The link shows the position of Neusiedel (the former Naujeningken) and Budwethen (now Malomoschaiskoje). Before 1976 Naujeningken/Neusiedel/Moskwino became an part of the commune administration but now the village is part of the "history". Even if you have an look on google satellit you can see the former railway station or streets. |

Re: II./JG 53 Moved to Neusiedl in June 1941, But whre is Neusiedl ?
Vielen Dank Herr Rasmussen !
That answered my question very well. Thank you, Paul and Larry for your input it was all very helpful. I have been using Wikimapia classic because it also shows a lot of the old German place names as well as the current Russian ones, and old Wiki allows me to switch between it, google and open street maps without changing web pages. So in summary, Neusiedl is about 1.5 km to the southwest of Malomozhajskoye and the airfield was likely within a kilometer of there. A convenient location close to the train station. Thanks again oquaig |
