Luftwaffe bomber loss on 16. 9. 1940 near Bury St. Edmunds
Hi all,
I am trying to establish indentity of bomber, its tasks and crew (including their fate) of loss for which I have only following vague information: 1. The loss has happenned on 16.9.1940 during the day 2. The bomber is identified as Dornier BUT as far as I was able to find out (see below), there were only lossses of He111s and Ju88s on that day so the identification might be incorrect 3. The bomber has attacked RAF Station Honington 4. The bomber was shot down by Honington's AA defence and crashed somewhere around Bury St. Edmunds. That is all what I have, any ideas? I have tried the Battle of Britain: Then and Now but I am not able to establish any positive match. I have find a useful site: https://www.battleofbritain1940.net/0043.html with following list of losses: Heinkel He111H ?: Crash landed at Dreux airfield after combat operations over the Channel. Heinkel He115 8L+GH: Believed to have lost bearings after operational sortie, Crashed at Aberdour. Heinkel He115C S4+CL: Ditched in North Sea after suffering engine failure during operational sortie. Junkers Ju88 F6+HM: Failed to return after operational sortie over English coast. Junkers Ju88A 9K+AH: Shot down by ground defences over southern England during night operation. Junkers Ju88A B3+HH: Crashed in flames near Coventry after hitting balloon cable. Junkers Ju88A ?: Crashed and burst into flames at Evreux after combat operation. Junkers Ju88A ? Crashed with severe damage after night operation at Melun-Villaroche. Junkers Ju88A F1+BM: Crew baled out of aircraft over Arlon that was damaged during combat operations. Junkers Ju88C R4+AH: Failed to return after night sortie over eastern England. But I am again not able to pick up any right candidate. Any help would be much appreciated. Pavel

Re: Luftwaffe bomber loss on 16. 9. 1940 near Bury St. Edmunds
Can't provide any details at all I'm afraid but this reminds me of a friend of an ex-girlfriend. He was a young lad in WW-2 and living near Bury St Edmunds and remembers a bomber being shot down and crashing nearby. He mentioned that the pilot was wounded and taken to hospital. Not sure what time frame he was referring to but it might of been around that period.

Apologies - it was this one I was referring to (link below). I thought it rang a bell but couldn't find the thread I asked the question in. The date for the one I referred to was on the 19th by the looks of it:

Re: Luftwaffe bomber loss on 16. 9. 1940 near Bury St. Edmunds
Hi all, thanks for your comments.
Well hucks216 - it looks very close except the date:-) May I ask you if you have ever succeed to find out the serial of Kowalski's aircraft? According to the 302 Sq ORB it was "3935" and with help of RAF serials books by Air Britainthere is only one possibility - Hurricane I P3935 Pavel

Re: Luftwaffe bomber loss on 16. 9. 1940 near Bury St. Edmunds
According to this Polish site
http://www.polishairforce.pl/dyw302straty.html my previous guess was correct: 19.09.1940 Hurricane I, WX-D (P3935) F/O Julian Kowalski Ju 88 Well but it is strange that there is no Luftwaffe bomber loss on 16.9.1940. This day the operational flight of 311 Sq was moving from Honington to East wretham and it is quite a remarkable event so I am pretty sure there is no mistake in the ORB. Pavel
