With sadness but also fond remembrance, I wish to announce here the passing of my uncle, CHARLES EDWIN HOWARD, who served with the 730th Squadron of the 452nd Bomb Group, in 1944-45. He passed earlier this year on March 23rd, 2024. He was 101 years of age.
Uncle Ed had completed 22 missions with the 452nd, beginning in (approx.) Dec.-1944, when his B-17 "Smokey Liz II" was shot down (along with 3 other -17s) on Mar. 19, 1945 by ME-262 jet fighters over Zwickau. One leg was badly injured by enemy gunfire before he bailed; he carried shrapnel in it for almost all his life. He survived a brutal forced march, thanks to heroic assistance from other prisoners as he could not walk, and internment in POW camp Stalag 7A, Moosberg. (Of significance to me, the 730th participated in bombing Frankfurt am Main on 2/17/45, just a few miles west of Hanau,
