With profound sorrow, we mourn the passing of Raymond F. Chambers, the last known World War II Glider Pilot of Operation Overlord, who has taken his final flight at the age of 102. With his departure, a living chapter of history falls silent. On the night of June 6, 1944, Raymond flew unarmed and unseen into destiny, guiding a fragile wooden glider across the dark skies of Normandy. Beneath him—enemy fire. Beside him—uncertainty. Behind him—hope. He carried an anti-tank gun, a jeep, and two young artillerymen of the 82nd Airborne, landing near Sainte-Mère-Église, where courage mattered more than survival. There were no second chances for glider pilots—only resolve.🕊️🇺🇸✈️
After Normandy, his service did not end. Raymond returned to the skies as a C-47 copilot, again delivering paratroopers into peril during Operation Market Garden, carrying freedom on his wings wherever duty called.
Rest in eternal peace, Raymond F. Chambers.
Your bravery changed the course of history.
Your sacrifice will never fade.
