Mai and Schack

Hello all

On 27 October 1943, Leutnant Günther Schack (174 victories, RK-EL) of 7./JG 51 collided with Oberfeldwebel Lothar Mai (45 victories, DK) also of 7./JG 51. Although Schack survived the incident and returned to base Mai perished. Does anybody have the loss list information of these two aircraft and be willing to post it on this forum? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: Mai and Schack

Hello Leo,

Ofw. Lothar Mai was killed in action on 27 August 1943, not 27 October. On his fateful flight he was flying Fw 190A-5 WNr. 7354 (or 7357), weisse 9, and fell to his death southeast of Ssewsk after being rammed by enemy aircraft (or possibly collided with Günther Schack´s aircraft, but e.g. Ernst Obermaier doest mention that Schack was involved in such an accident). Posthumously, Mai was awarded DKiG on 17 October 1943.

Hope this helps a little,

Ota

Mai and Schack

Hi there Ota

Thanks for your answer. I too thought that Obermaier would have mentioned something about this incident but nothing there. Many thanks for the information that quite possibly Mai was rammed by an enemy aircraft which was new to me. I think that I will change what I have on Schack to reflect this. Many thanks and take care!

Horrido!

Leo
