Lt Chester F. Yokum (or Yokom)?- 10 Feb 1919

The Charleroi Cemetery in Belgium is the restng place for the Canadian Lt Chester F. Yokum who according his casualty card (incident) had crashed in a Dolphin of 23 Squadron.
His surname appears thus on his gravestone, but up till his Casualty Cards, Grave Registration Register and many other places it also appears as Yokom.
His squadron has moreover changed into 59 Squadron (not reflected on his gravestone).

Can one safely assume that the gravestone ultimately gives the correct spelling, even though on many previous occasions the name is written slightly different (see e.g.London Gazette, Flight Archives, National Archives..) ?

Thanks for the info.

Regards,

Leendert

His name was 2nd Lt Chester Frank Yokum (his CWGC gravestone is wrong) he was killed in Dolphin F7048 of 23 Sqn which was wrecked in fire after a stall and crashed during landing on 10.2.19

Source "The Sopwith Dolphin in RFC, RNAS, RAF and Polish Service'

There is a photo of him in book in cockpit of Dolphin "WET PAINT" he seems to have been a Ferry Pilot

Paul,

If his surname was Yokum, then his gravestone is right after all.
There's a picture on findagrave.com.

Perhaps the name Yokom on many other previous places was written as it sounded with regard to this lieutenant...?

Thanks for the info.

Regards,

Leendert
