Can anyone say which unit had previously operated D.8131/17?

Re: Photo Pfalz D.III

Hi Clint

This is 8151/17 (not 8131/17) and it was an aircraft flown by Ltn Ewald Konig from Jasta 23 who experienced engine trouble on May 3rd, 1918 and landed north of Gonnelieu.

It was assigned the "captured aircraft" serial number G/1Bde/2

It is known to have been shipped to London and exhibited there (only because of the number of photos available). It may have been on a "road-show" across the country in 1918-19, but was not preserved.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Pfalz D.III

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of two Pfalz D.IIIa at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/j14-Flugzeug...8AAOSwkG1gLlVL

The photo has been seen before and I've seen the aircraft described as D.6032/17 and D.6041./17 described as belonging to Jasta 62.I'm not 100 percent whether the first number of the serial is 8 rather than 6.

Clint

Re: Photo Pfalz D.III

Hi

Thanks Stig,if misreading german aircraft serials becomes a competitive olympic event (and I think we'd both accept that as inevitable) I feel I could be in with a shout at a podium position. However, in this case I felt pretty secure with 6032/17 as not only have I seen that photo before, but there is a different photo of the machine tentatively identified by Geg van Wyngarden in WDF 174. So thats a definite. The seller of the other copy I've seen identifies the nmachine in the background as 6041/17, though its no easier to read than on this one.

Regards,

Clint
