Des Curtis DFC
I have heard that Des has sadly passed away aged 100.
Joined the RAF in 1941 as a wireless op/gunner initially with 235 Sqn before converting to Mosquitos as a Navigator. He helped form the secretive 618 Sqn which was to run parallel with 617 Sqn with ops against the Tirpitz. With his pilot Doug Turner they carried out many low level raids including several against U-Boat pens. On one occasion they sank U-976 with a shell from their 6lb Molins canon. In 1944 they joined 248 Sqn as part of the Banff Strike Wing. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur in 2018. |
