Me109 picture 1940
Dear friends ,
Does someone know the caption of this picture ? Could it be a 9./JG26 aircraft , one of those involved in the 21 July 1940 accident , when 8 planes were sent from Germany to Caffiers and lost in Normandy after a navigational error ? Many thanks , Zorglub |

Re: Me109 picture 1940
One of a series of pics. - This one says 9./JG 26 pilot has managed to bring his Bf 109 E-1 “Yellow 6” (W.Nr. 2891) back to France despite being hit in combat at the end of August 1940. Note that beneath the fuselage is a fairing designed to protect a camera, which indicates that this aircraft was first produced as an E-5 reconnaissance craft and subsequently adapted into a fighter. Hit by a Spitfire south of London on September 30th of the same year, it was destroyed during an emergency landing at Caffiers.
I have another caption somewhere else ie.with reference to who the pilot maybe also.... |

Re: Me109 picture 1940
Many thanks !
At last it is a 9./JG26 plane as suspected , maybe involved in the previously mentioned accident . The 21 July affair is not so documented , just have a look in Erik Mombeeck's book " Luftwaffe Gallery Special Album JG26 " . The area looks very much as seen with yellow 9 on her belly . Is it a colourised picture or an original one ? Zorglub |

[quote=vivfuego;243252] Hit by a Spitfire south of London on September 30th of the same year, it was destroyed during an emergency landing at Caffiers.
The emergency landing at Caffiers on 30 September 1940 concerned the Bf 109 E-4 WNr. 3891, not 2891. The pilot Fw Konrad Carl was injured. Sources: Gen.Qu. loss report from 2 October 1940 and JFV Vol. 4/II page 343. Regards Leo |
