2/Lt Henry J. Woods
Hello all
I cannot find - despite looking at the usual sources including the Austrian data bases - the serial number for the P-51 coded VF-B flown by Henry Woods in which he was lost when he collided with a He 111 near St Polten in Austria on 29 May 1944. Does anyone know what the serial number was?? Regards Russell |

Re: 2/Lt Henry J. Woods
Indeed, apparently no MACR filed.
Findagrave has burial place unknown, although there has been an application for a marker in his hometown Detroit: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/1052...bjectPage=3141 Will look further. Regards, Leendert |

Re: 2/Lt Henry J. Woods
Gentlemen:
I can not be 100% certain that this serial number is correct as it it a match of several sources. I believe that the correct serial number is 42-106746 for Woods KMAC on 29 May 1944. I have a tentative code letter of 'N' but that could be wrong. Woods's assigned aircraft was 42-103590 VF-N. If you all can confirm VF-B as being accurate then I will gladly change my records. I trust that this is helpful for you research. Ted51 |

Re: 2/Lt Henry J. Woods
This website http://raf-112-squadron.org/52ndfghonor_roll42_43.html
has 43-24818 for VF-B, but since this P-51 was destroyed on 21 Sep 1944, the code letters here may have been allocated after Wood's loss. 42-103590 lost with Pilot Lt. Frederick Fisher on 23 June 1944. Also see ME-1284 with (alas) quite cursory info and ID-tags of Henry J. Woods, but no details about his P-51: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/143472927. He-111 identified he reportedly collided with? Leendert |

Re: 2/Lt Henry J. Woods
Hi All
Thanks for the responses. Its remarkable how some losses just slip through the cracks. Supposedly collided with the following: FFS B 22 He 111H-11 WNr. 8390 BB+QE ? % shot down by a P-51 which then collided with it, crashed near Ybbs an der Donau, W Vienna at 1100; Uffz Friedrich Albertin and 4 KiA On the same mission Capt Sam Brown of the 31st FG reportedly baled out over Italy on his return from the operation. Did he? And if so, what was the serial of the P-51 he was flying? Thanks again Russell |
