8AF 9AF band markings on P47 43-44
Hi all
Just a quick question. We know the P47’s of the 8AF 9AF carried recognition bands in 1943 –44 These were white on Olive Drab and Black on natural aluminium. Areas covered were half of the cowling ring and bands to the fin and rudder. The question is, when was these markings discontinued? When D-Day markings were applied (3rd June onwards) or even much later? Regards MS |

Mark:
The tail bands stayed on for some time as post-D-Day photos attest. However, the nose bands started disappearing in early 1944 when groups started wearing colors, like the 4th in red and the 352nd in blue. In many groups this coincided with the switch to the P-51, although the 78th and others started using cowl decorations on their P-47s. I am sure there was a "post-appearance" authorization order somewhere. |
