22nd Sept 1943 - Aberdeenshire
In the Aberdeenshire register of incidents, there is reference to a "Photographic Flash Bomb" being found at Udny Castle.
Does anybody have any info on Luftwaffe Aerial activity from that date from Norway, noting that 21st April 1943 was the last raid by the Luftwaffe in Scotland (They did continue to attack shipping up until April 1945) I am unsure if the bomb was dropped by the Luftwaffe or RAF |

Re: 22nd Sept 1943 - Aberdeenshire
Home Office reports showed the heaviest on Aberdeen as being on 21/22-2-1943 beginning at 2217hrs. and lasting an hour . |The KG 2 history shows that I & II/KG2 had moved to Stavanger to carry out the raid moving back to Eindhoven and Soesterberg on the 25th. Just out of interest the H.O reports show a machine gun attack on Edinburgh on the 5/6th May 1944 by what other reports show as a Ju 88.
As regards 21/22nd Sept the H.O. reports say a single enemy aircraft made landfall at Macduff, flew inland for 15 miles and out by Aberdeen, minor incidents reported at Udny Aberdeenshire. Last edited by Brian Bines; 22nd February 2017 at 14:46. |

Re: 22nd Sept 1943 - Aberdeenshire
Yes, but does allow an area to focus on.
City Incident register only details one enemy action that day at Udny Castle. An Eye Witness as a child remembers the location, and the Bomb Disposal team visiting the North Side of the Castle, confirming it was German and stating it was harmless. A second eye witness recalls a German casing being taken by the local blacksmith after it was removed. Still looking at RAF side, as RAF Dyce did have a Photographic unit, However they only appear to do fixed photography from aircraft and not the deployment of illumination. Most of the info appears to suggest it was German. |
