FW190 Encounter
On the night of 15/16th March 1944, a Avro Lancaster Mk.B.II of No.514 (B) Squadron, No.3 Group, RAF Bomber Command was attacked by a FW190 at 23.30hrs at 20,000ft on a course of 040' over Stuttgart.
The FW190 opened fire on the Lancaster from port quarter level at a range of 300 yards. The Lancaster's gunners returned fire. Hit were registered on both fighter and bomber. So determind was the attack the pilot of the FW190 collided with the Lancaster resulting in damage to the rear turret and port rudder. Severe damage was also caused to port outer engine, the airscrew was torn-off, and the exhuast manifold was also removed in the collison. On the Lancaster's return part of the FW190's canopy and fuselarge was found embedded in the engine. The crew reported the FW190 as destroyed. Can anyone confirm any FW190 losses on this night, either in aircraft or pilots. Thanksfor your help Smudger Smith
