Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

To be honest Clint, this looks very much like a D.III to me

Slabsided fuselage (oval with the D.V) and the rather "cut" fin/rudder vs the more rounded one on the D.V. Also the upper wing is (or at least seems to be) higher put than the D.V.

No help with Jasta colours I'm afraid.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Hi Stig,

Clearly further attention needed on my part to the rudder in future. In all honesty I actually saw rounded fuselage rather than slab sided D.III hence thread title. This is in fact becoming a bit of a habit for me on here with D.III/D.Va identities.

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of an Albatros D.Va of Jasta Boelcke at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-6-Flieg...QAAOSwKThe1sFn

Does anyone recognise the markings and have a serial number for the machine or a name for the pilot?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Hello,

Currently on ebay is an Albatros D.Va named Lini of Jasta 16b (?) at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Flieger...wAAOSwZzdfmxCG

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Flieger...4AAOSwls5fmxGI

The identity of Jasta 16b is tentative as I'm assuming that it belonged to the same sellers photographs of the crashed Pfalz D.III D.4034/17 known to belong to that unit at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Flieger...UAAOSwk4JfmxDq

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Clint this is a D.III (OAW), with D.V - type rudder and crosses marked further forward.

Darn Nick

Flat sides, D.III alright. Missed that too. Stab in the back using D.V rudder on some D.IIIs if you ask me....

Cheers

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Hello Both,

Agree Stig, the curved rudders on OAW built D.III are really a swine.

Thanks Nick for the correct Identity. I thought knowing that the machine was a D.III (OAW) would render discovery of the unit and the serial more straightforward. But no.Who knew that the natural habitat of the D.III (OAW) was Switzerland

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Clint this MAY be from Kest 4 or 5 who were at Freiburg ( only 40 miles from Basel) at the time and probably overflew the area; Kest 4's earlier single-seaters had black tails.
Later in 1918 both were opposing the Independent Force raids ( re-organised as Jastas).

Regards
Nick
