Re: Information concerning the loss of Feldwebel Wastl Mayer 26.04.1940
Hi Rick,
I believe he belongs to 1. K.Fl.Gr. 506, a He 115 lost near Andalsnes over the Northsea, I had no crew names only that a Gunner was KIA. Regards khorat Michael Balss |

Not so. I believe 'Wastl' was his familiar name as follows:
2.(H)/31 Henschel Hs126B-1. Crashed north-west of Rotenburg during night landing approach. FF Fw Sebastian Mayer and BO Lt Arthur Salm both killed. Aircraft 100% write-off. |

I agree with Peter that "Wastl" is a german short for Sebastian,
but between Rotenburg and the Northsea big difference ? Michael |

Nordseegebiet = North Sea area (theatre of operations). Unit probably engaged in coastal watch duties.

Nordseegebiet, for a Sea-unit, that is understanble, but for the H.31 ,,,???
All these losses , 4 to 5, during night-flights Rémi |

Re: Information concerning the loss of Feldwebel Wastl Mayer 26.04.1940
Luft QM's returns dated 28-4-40 has this as a Heimat flight on the 26th. crash by Rotenburg to unknown cause while on a 'Nachtplatzflug'. Perhaps the Nordseegebiet on the Fallen Card was wrong info. to the relatives ?

The crash actually occurred at Mulmshorn, north-west of Rotenburg, at 22.30 hours (CET).
