RAF 65/122 Sqn Mustang MkIV,s 1945

Hello All,
At the beginning of May 1945 65 Sqn gave up it,s Mustang MkIV,s to 122 sqn at RAF Peterhead, I am currently trying to trace any Photographic Picures of any of these MkIV,s whether in 65 Sqn or 122 Sqn to try & ascertain Markings/Serial numbers & what finish they were in, whether in Camouflaged or Bare Metal.

Has anybody got any Photos of these aeroplanes at all that I could beg, borrow or steal?
Probably asking for the Holy Grail here as I know Images of even 122 Sqn,s Mustang MkIII,s are like hens teeth!.

I would be over the Moon if any kind soul could help us out as putting together a Private History of 122 Sqn

Re: RAF 65/122 Sqn Mustang MkIV,s 1945

Many Thanks for the replies - Very much appriciated!
Those serial Numbers Zoran are brilliant! very useful indeed!

Chris I wonder could you have a look for me in the 122 sqn diary as regards June 25 1945 when my relative W/O G.K.Watkins flew together with Fl/Lt Gall on a 6.25 hour cross-country over France, he used Mustang MkIV MT*K, was looking for it,s serial number or any records of fuel on board etc &/or of course any Images of any 122 sqn,s Mustangs MkIV,s?

I do have a couple of Images of 122 Sqn,s MkIII,s for swops that you may not have?

And many thanks for the offer ClinA-78 I think I may have done the same as you & took the advantage of free downloads & managed to get the summarys/OP,s that I wanted, many thanks

Re: RAF 65/122 Sqn Mustang MkIV,s 1945

1945? Diary ends 8 May 1945 and if that is the case, there would not be a mention in the F540 as it would have been non-operational the war being over. A quick check and he is mentioned as a member of B Flt which was on 1 Jan 45 commanded by Flt Lt R O Webster. No mention of Gall on that date

Re: RAF 65/122 Sqn Mustang MkIV,s 1945

Smokie. re. your first query both squadrons had camouflaged and unpainted Mustangs. There are photos at Peterhead.

KM148 YT--Q unpainted ( ex-USAAF). KH695 YT--E camouflaged.
KH642 MT--M camouflaged. KH678 MT--? unpainted.
Camouflage were US colours Olive Drab 613, Sea Grey 603, Lt. Grey 602. Sky Blue 610 codes ( actually Sky).
65 had Mk. IV/IVa March-May 1945 at Peterhead, to Andrews Field.
122 " May-July 1945 .
Nick

Many thanks for looking Chris, shame nothing is in the Squadron Diary but at least it is mentioned in the Summary of May/June 1945

Some good info there Nick thankyou, as expected there was probably a mix of painted & Bare metal Aircraft.

Best regards Keith.

Re: RAF 65/122 Sqn Mustang MkIV,s 1945

Hi Keith. A little more info on 65/122 on these pages. Also the 2 squadrons as at Peterhead; there is a photo of YT-E but havn't seen one of MT-M. I'm sure they wouldn't have aerial wires as the VHF radios (SCR-522A) used the existing mast only as the Eighth AF did. Also the Dallas canopy (on KH695 a Mk.IVA) was the "Tru-vue" type with slightly bulged rear for less distortion.

Regards
Nick

Re: RAF 65/122 Sqn Mustang MkIV,s 1945

Nick sincere apologies as have been away.
You are a star! These are the very first images that I have ever seen of 122 sqn MIVa Mustangs
Gordon flew YT*F on 4th May 1945 borrowing this from 65Sqn & MT*K was his last & Longest trip at that time for the Squadron on 25th June 1945.
Very Many thanks

P.S Just found in his Logbook that he flew MT*M on no less than 15 occasions!
