Re: KuK Flying Boat Photos
Excellent find Clint
I agree with the Lohner M-type E18 and E20 identification. However, with regard to UFAG W 13 I prefer Hansa-Brandenburg W 13 (UFAG) myself.... The double is actually of K307 I also wonder from where the seller gets Albatros sS4? I have never seen a photo of one, and no markings visible on the actual photo either. The flip side has nothing to say. Any good pointer? Cheers Stig |

Re: KuK Flying Boat Photos
Hi Stig,
The purported photo of an Albatros sS4 does resemble another photo I've seen of the type. As for the correct designation of the W.13. I've in effect gone with the designation as used in Peter Schupita's Die k.u.k. Seeflieger, though at the end of the day either UFAG W.13 or Albatros (UFAG) W.13, it's a W.13. Not having a reference dedicated to the W.13, I can't add much but would say the immediately preceding Brandenburg built batch K.320 to K.364 are identical according to dimensions ,performance etc, though K.305 to K.309 differ. Re: KuK Flying Boat Photos
Thanks Clint
I have really nothing to say regarding these Albatros training flying boats. Located a photo (small and rather bad) of the sS3 where the serial shows off much better than the aircraft. The photo on e-bay is perhaps before delivery to KuK Seeflieger? With regard to the W.13, I go by the details provided by Reinhard Keimel who explicitly state the type was developed by Ing. Weichmann (with help from Ernst Heinkel) who worked for Hansa-Brandenburg at the time. UFAG and Phönix then built the type under licence. The design - production of flying boats for the Austria-Hungarian Navy is complex and I have not worked out yet how to file all the data. It is not made any easier with designers going back and forth between the companies and basically designing the same aircraft all over again.... It is of course up to every individual how they want to file photos and data, but I prefer to keep things under the original company, even when designs have been sold and not only been built under licence. There are exceptions, one good one which comes to mind is the De Havilland 125 which I file under Hawker Siddely.... Cheers Stig |

Re: KuK Flying Boat Photos
Hi Stig,
I file my KuK navy machines on excel with the serial down the left hand side then manufacturer and then type name. The Schupita work was the first I owned covering all KuK naval aircraft, so necessarily very influential. Still given Reinhard Keimel's reputation, no doubt if I'd read that work I'd have used his system as the basis. Its just that to my mind Albatros (UFAG) W.13 looks too much like an airforce type designation. Regards, Clint |

Re: KuK Flying Boat Photos
Well Clint
I guess that is one way of doing it, but how do you file your photos? The same way? What happens if you want to keep a photo where no serial is visible? Cheers Stig |
