Hi guys

I have just spotted a new book (2006) on the web by the above, who was an air gunner with 570BS/390BG. I tried to order a copy but failed! Just couldn't make contact. It's called 'MY COMBAT DIARY WITH EIGHTH AIR FORCE B-17s'

Has anyone a copy? I am interested in the author's statement that he was shot down by friendly fire and would appreciate details.

I know Andy personally. You should be able to order the book through the 390th museum website. I have the book. Is there something specific or do you want just the general story.
It happened May 29th 1944, after Andy had completed his tour with the 390th BG. He was flying weather missions with the 802nd wx recce. They took off at 2200 to fly south in England climbing all the time, until they reached the Atlamtic. They were then to circle several times over the Atlantic , noting wx conditions and cloud formations. They were to come back in over Beachey Head. During climbout, they were picked up by searchlights and fired an identification flare, which caused the searchlights to be extinguished. After their wx recce, they started toward Beachey Head with their IFF turned off because recently a German night fighter had homed in on a B-24s IFF and shot it down. As they passed over Beachey, Andy who was in the TT noticed gun flashes below. He notified the pilot who ordered another flare fired. They also turned on the IFF. About this time several searchlights illuminated them and the AA got closer. They were hit in the #3 and 4 engines. They made an emergency landing at a nearby American airbase. Upon landing they counted nine AA holes in the ship, including one in the bomb bay. They got a bite to eat, borrowered a truck and driver and returned to their base by early morning. Hope this helps.

Does Andy mention the aircraft's serial number and identity of pilot? Were there any injuries to teh crew?
