JU-88 Nightfigher - Crew Identification
On night of June 12th, 1944, a Lancaster bomber VR-A was shot down over Cambrai, France. The Lancaster was from 419 "Moose" Squadron - RCAF. One of the casualties was Andy Mynarski who was awarded the VC for this particular mission. It was reported that the bomber fell victim to a Junkers JU 88 nightfighter.
If someone could provide details as to the crew of the JU 88, it would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: JU-88 Nightfigher - Crew Identification
Hi Dave,
Mynarski's Lancaster was shot down by Lt Heinz Reuter (FF) Ofw Trinks (BF) and Fw Alois Lechner in a Ju 88G nightfighter of 7./NJG2. Reuter had 12 confirmed victories and 5 unconfirmed. On the 08.01.45 was Staffelfuehrer of 7./NJG3. Heinz Reuter was born on the 25.04.1922 and passed away 03.10.1997. I met Heinz during 1996 and he gave me a short description of the combat, please see attachment. Regards Melvin Last edited by Melvin Brownless; 1st April 2010 at 12:35. |

Re: JU-88 Nightfigher - Crew Identification
Hi Melvin:
Thanks for the information on Lt. Reuter's crew. The story of Andy Mynarski and the crew of the Lancaster is quite extraordinary and seemingly well documented. It's amazing that Hollywood hasn't tried to capitalize on it. Hi SES: I went to the website and was quite impressed with the detail involving LW claims. The night of 12-13 was an eventful period for the NJG crews. There were 40 claims. Reuter's claim was listed in "obj. Abbeville" which I believe is approximately 75 miles (120 km) from Cambrai. The term "obj.", I'm assuming means vincinity. The time given was 01:35. So thanks for your help. Best regards
