Re: Photos 10-22
Ed
What is it about 229Sqn Hurricanes in France. Is this the third in as many postings and is just as confusing. http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=370101403078 Hurricane RE-Z V6704 of 229 Sqn - Northolt 10.40 shot down by Bf109's 26.10.40. P/O D B H McHardy rescued unhurt but does not say POW or rescued by who? Are these not a load of Luftwaffe personnel doing around this overturned Hurricane when it was lost in the UK? The V looks a bit wobbly but cannot connect any other serials with the number 6704 It is a MkI Assume RE-Z = possibly a few other possibilities. No evidence flaps down - undercarriage would be hidden? Tail does not look too damaged for a turn over. Is it on sand? Something does not add up here. regards Mark |

Re: Photos 10-22
Mark,
My first impression was not a V in front of the number. Perhaps a K or X? My monitor resolution appears a little to blame or the light on the photo (?). Confusing, perhaps frustrating, but that's what makes solving mysteries fun. The ground looks like soft dirt or sand. But there is a shape in the distance I can't quite make out. Regards, Ed |

Re: Photos 10-22
Hi Ed and Mark,
Believe it or not but Ed found another photo of this very aircraft ! I think he posted it about this time last year. JG 26 was mentioned on the E-bay caption but this appears to refer to the source of the original photo. Apparently JG 26 were not involved in shooting down RE-Z. Strange to relate but the only part of the serial visible in the earlier photo was the 'V'. The RE-Z was completely in view too. From the relevant entries in The Battle of Britain, Then & Now and Men of the Battle of Britain (Supplementary Volume) it is clear McHardy became a POW that day. His Hurricane and another were shot down while attacking a Heinkel 59 moored off the French coast. Hope this helps, Martin Gleeson. |

Re: Photos 10-22
This is not a Bf 109 cockpit, possible is a Ar 96 cockpit?

Re: Photos 10-22
Hi Mark and ohers,
Whilst reserching thrugh certain RAF Squadrons FORM 540 and 541 at the PRO (now National Arcives) many years ago, I discovered one particular unit had as many mistakes (errors) as there were aircraft in that unit! So do not be surprized (I am not) regarding the 1940 to 1941 period in taking particular serials qouted as fact. Misspelling in records from this period seems rather common. ed |
