Re: Reinbrecht & Zuzic

Hello,

Herwig Zuzic recalls me a lot of memories: when I was working on JG 77, several of his Staffel comrades – most aren't now among us anymore –remembered well his history: he was returned by the Soviets with his friend Eugen Wintergerst with whom he had a mid-air collision and was captured. When I wrote the chronicle of JG 1 this pair of pilots re-appeared, now as Staffelkapitäne at the newly formed III. Gruppe. Members of his Staffel told me about Wintergerst's prophecy: "Ever since we were at the front, we have always been together. Herwig is dead, I know I will not be long joining him." Unfortunately, he was right…
… And thus it was not a real surprise to discover that their fates crossed again my road: what is less-known is that they were also members of JG 2. We were glad to discover several photos showing them also at the "Richthofen".
Doug, I spent many hours in den Bundes Archives in Korneliemünster, copying hundreds of files of Luftwaffe officers, but when I read the details you are able to provide, I am always impressed.
Best regards

Erik

Re: Reinbrecht & Zuzic

Thanks for the compliments, but I must emphasize that 85% of our material was found by Larry deZeng, the indefatigable detective, combing the microfilms. Lately he has been hitting major "pay-dirt". In fact its no longer so much a case of finding data but having the time/energy to deal with it all.

My part has been to sift through books and web-sites and look for nuggets. Every time I think I have delved through absolutely everything, I find more goodies.

Larry estimates that it will take another 5 years to deal with the remaining worthwhile documents by which point we will have data on approx. 35,000 individuals. The intention is to eventually make the database generally available one way or another.
