What happened to this Ju-88?
What happened to the 2nd Ju 88 mentioned in the report? Would there be any German records of this encounter? Was the gunner injured / killed or ran out of ammunition? The aircraft would have surely been damaged. Did it make it to base / land elsewhere or crash?
Thanks. http://i520.photobucket.com/albums/w...Report1_xl.jpg http://i520.photobucket.com/albums/w...eport2b_xl.jpg |

Re: What happened to this Ju-88?
German reports covering such engagements are mainly those recording any personnel casualties (Namentliche Verlustmeldungen) or aircraft losses (Verlustliste) that resulted. However, these often fall short on essential time/location detail so matching claims to losses can be fraught. However, I believe the first Ju88 attacked was as follows:
3./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-1. Shot down by Spitfires during armed reconnaissance over Dunkirk and crashed in the Channel. Probably that claimed by F/L Malan, F/O Freeborn, and Sgt Mould of No. 74 Squadron 5.45 a.m. FF Uffz Werner Mattner, BF Uffz Erich Klose, BS Uffz Wilhelm Gottlebe, and BO Gefr Johannes Corsepius all missing. Aircraft 100% write-off. That being the case, no further losses were recorded by this unit in either of the sources mentioned so it would seem that the second Ju88 attacked suffered no crew casualties nor significant damage to the aircraft. |

Peter are you sure this is the same encounter? The combat report states that they were flying Hurricanes. |

Re: What happened to this Ju-88?
David,
Oops. A not altogether insignificant detail that I completely overlooked - sorry. There was another engagement against Ju88s but much later that morning involving No.151 Squadron Hurricanes which I believe resulted in one German aircraft damaged as follows: 8./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-1. Shot down by No. 151 Squadron Hurricanes over Dunkirk and crash-landed south of Calais 9.00 a.m. FF Uffz Lothar Georgi, BO Uffz Kurt Spura, and BS Gefr Paul Wieczoreck slightly wounded, Bordmechanic believed unhurt. Aircraft 100% write-off. However, this does not 'square' with the first Ju88 claimed as a total loss. So an alternative scenario insinuates itself in that No.151 Squadron got both KG30 aircraft and the claim by No.74 Squadron was invalid - which having recently met one of the pilots involved I seriously doubt. But surely the answer is in your own hands ? What squadron number and whose signature appear on the original (un-edited) Form F ? |

What do the German records show? There's more information on the B of B Forum here:- http://disc.yourwebapps.com/discussi...rch_term=Ju+88 It appears that claims that day took place over British soil or out to sea. One near Calais? The writer of the Combat Report chased the particular JU-88 of interest inland, ran out of ammunition and returned. What happened to that JU-88? Was there one that crashed in France south of the coast? Was the the rear gunner of the JU-88 injured / killed (or simply ran out of ammunition?) Thanks V much. |

Re: What happened to this Ju-88?
David,
I am correctly rebuked. 8002reverse It would be nice if you could provide full background on future questions - it saves so much time. My post of September 3 still stands. It seems that the 3./KG30 aircraft claimed by No.74 Squadron was seen to crash in the Channel by No.151 Squadron who evidently later engaged and damaged the 8./KG30 machine referred to in my subsequent post. As I have already said, surviving records often fall short on essential detail so the timings in my replies are inevitably going to suffer from a degree of approximation. |

I am correctly rebuked. Not a rebuke, more a clarification. |
