F/L Thomas "Doc" Wood Savage (105167) - 64 & 92 Sqns

Hello all,

Posting this again as I am still searching for information and photos of this airman.

Savage was posted to 64 Sqn on the 14th October 1940 and flew with them until some time after mid 1941 when he was posted to 92 Sqn who he flew with through the push through North Africa until moving to Malta to cover the invasion of Sicily. Savage was shot down on the 10th July 1943.

I do have the information in Wynn's "Men of the Battle of Britain", Shores' "Those Other Eagles" and information concerning his last sortie from the AHB. He is also mentioned briefly in Neville Duke's autobiography. However I would dearly love to obtain as much other information as may be out there and especially photographs (either individual or group) whilst with 64 and 92 Sqns, as he is a relative. Savage had 4 and 1 shared destroyed and 2 damaged, and I would also be exceedingly keen to know if these combat reports exist.

Thanks in advance and I hope somebody on this board can help.

Cheers,

Tim

According to my files, he has one shared victory with 64 Sqn, on Feb 9, 1941. It was shared with P/O John Hampton Rowden and S/L James Rankin. Their combat reports can be found at CR: Air 50/24-118&119, 213&214, 216, 218, 220&221; which is to say Air 50, piece 24, images 118 etc on the microfilm.

I show 4/0/2 claims in North Africa with 92 Sqn, all documented only in the ORB. There is no organized collection of combat reports for the Med, corresponding to Air 50 which basically covers the units based in England (with a few exceptions). North African combat reports tend to be kept in the Appendix volume(s) associated with each squadron, but these are by no means complete.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Many thanks Frank, that is most helpful. Now I just need someone to dash down to the National Archives for me!

You wouldn't have access to the ORBs for 64 or 92, or know of someone who does?

Cheers,

Tim
