ID of He111 crashed & Burned with "C" on the rudder

Hello,

Has anyone got any insight into the identity of this crashed and burned out He111, with the last two codes of +CK, with the "C" repeated on the fin. This latter usage is probably diagnostic to a particular unit, and it may not be Western Campaign or BoB, as I originally assumed.

Who can help?

Larry

This looks VERY much like a series of photos that I was shown in Germany way back in 1976. I made a pencil note about it in the margin of Wolfgang Dierich's KG55 history. I remarked "C on tail" in my note.

The note I have indicates this to be G1+CK of 2/KG55 which crash landed and burned out at Chartres aerodrome on 11 May 1941, although I have no idea if this makes sense. The image does not look much like an aerodrome to me.

I have no way of back-tracking to check.

Interesting that you should ask this question now Larry - just started reading Wakefield's book on KGr. 100. He states early that they carried the individual aircraft code on the tail - and sure enough from my loss date I have:
28-May-40, , He 111H-2, 1418?, Ebert, Fw. Kurt, 2., KGr. 100, , 6N+CK, , KIA due to Flak over Rombakken during sortie to Narvik. Notlandung. FlSch also KIA, Bf & Bm WIA, POW., Bf Uffz. Georg Ring, Bm Uffz. Wilhelm Korte & FlSch Gefr. Otto Mädl, WNr. dup with later losses. Recovered??, X.Fl.Korps/Norwegen, Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #1)-Vol.2; Shores, Fledgling Eagles. p.334; Balke, KG 100, p.364; Norwegian Aircraft Wreck site, Kongsbakktind bei Ankenes, 100%, F. Could this be the machine?

Re: ID of He111 crashed & Burned with "C" on the rudder

thenelm,

Actually it's not. I'm well familiar with the KGr100/KG100 practice of putting the a/c letters on the top of the fin (not rudder). This has the letter on the rudder, which is not consistent with the common practice in KG100.

Thanks for your effort to respond.

Regards,

If it is the KG 55 ac, I have a photo of said ac before it crashed
