Re: flugbuch from lw-oberst

Jim, the book looks good to me. Higher ranks did fly a lot, and in this case, he was a staff colonel, judging from the flights which are mostly in courier aircraft. Looks like he was killed either in an accident, or shot down. My uncle was a major and flew many similar flights in similar aircraft at the same time. He was shot down once by Mustangs while flying an Arado trainer.

Re: flugbuch from lw-oberst

Lieb flew from 1923 to 1925 for the Junkers airline “Ilag” and later for the Lufthansa. Sometimes after the outbreak of WW II he was reactivated for the Luftwaffe and got a military rank.

Regards
Peter

Re: flugbuch from lw-oberst

Hello,

Buried in Noyers-Pont-Maugis. So he was probably killed in the Ardennes during the retreat???

Best regards.

Jim - are you asking if it was rare for field grade/flag grade officers to fly combat missions?

Not so much for USAAF.. a lot of 8th and 12th and 15th AF missions were flown by Brigadier generals leading large combat wings on important targets. About 1/3 of the Fighter Groups were commanded by full Colonels and there were quite a few Lieutenant colonels leading squadrons or serving as Group Ops and Deputy Group commanders.

Galland, of course, still snuck in combat missions as head of Luftwaffe Fighter Command and there were quite a few experten like Ihlefeld and Priller at the head of Gruppe and JG's..

Dénes Bernád will become famous soon enough
Re: flugbuch from lw-oberst

The other relevant factor is age. This particular Obstlt. was 52 years old at the time of his death. Not really your typical flyer's age.
