Re: Lancaster W4846 83 Squadron
Air Britain's RAF Aircraft W1000- Z9999 says it was missing on a mission to Cologne on 27th Feb 1943.
I think Mon Glad and Cologne are about 50 miles apart

Re: lancaster W4846 83 Squadron
Yes, 50 miles is about correct. Problem is, most planes did not get lost over the target, but rather en route or while on the return trip. Also if one can believe Bomber Command Losses, there have been more crashes around Moenchengladbach than anywhere in Germany. Truth be told, Moechengladbach was the collection point for most deceased aviators in North-Rhine Westphalia. Danny

Re: lancaster W4846 83 Squadron
I've a note that the aircraft crashed at Netfeld-Genrade (sic) near Mönchengkadbach, but couldn't find this place on any map or in postalcode book.

Re: lancaster W4846 83 Squadron
Michel,
Can't find a Genrohe N of Brüggen, however there is a Genholt N of Brüggen. Other possibilities near Mönchengladbach - where the crew initially were buried in the Main Cemetery - are Genfeld, Genhof or Gerderhahn, all located SW of Mönchengladbach. The loss of W4846 with target Cologne is not mentioned by Ludwig Hügen in his book "... und stürzte brennend ab"(ISBN 3-928504-23-1), Although this book is filled with errors ! Henk. |

Re: lancaster W4846 83 Squadron
Henk, in effect it is not Huegen's mistake, as he just copied data from other authors books and databases and ded some research on his own on a few cases. A revision is in the works. But in general, yes you are right there are a lot of mistakes. Danny
