German Cross in Gold

I think most of you will know the DKiG book of Veit Scherzer. The records for DKiG bearers from October 1944 till the end of the war is rather fragmentary. Does anybody know if there is an update or errata available?

Re: German Cross in Gold

John,

To the best of my knowledge there have not been any updates or supplements to this book. Unfortunately as you noted DKiG holders from 44 on are frequently either missing or dated improperly. I have a few flyers in my collection who are not listed at all.

Regards

Jeremy

Re: German Cross in Gold

Hello Jeremy,

yes, I encountered the same. Several pilots who have DKiG but not listed in the book. Also many cases of incorrect dates, partly because of incomplete data at ZNS-Aachen. Well, what can you do? I was looking to verify the story that some pilots got DKiG as late as March - April 1945, but that seems not to be possible unfortunately.

Regards, John.

Re: German Cross in Gold

John,

I would say it is definately possible for some pilots to have received the DKiG at the late dates you noted. One of the Soldbuchs I own is to a wireless operator who received his DKiG in April of 45, though he was serving with a flak unit at that time. Here again he is not listed among in current sources, however I do have a photo of him wearing the DK to substantiate his award.

Just out of curiousity what are the pilot names you are trying to pin down?

Cheers

Jeremy

Ed thanks for the website info.

Re: German Cross in Gold

One of them is Leutnant Franz Feiler, he must have been a fighter pilot in JG 54. No idea why he had the DKiG, but I have a picture showing it.

John.
