Sgt J W T M Smith & Sqn Ldr E G Gilmore, 408 Sqn 26/02/43
Hello there
I'm looking for some information about the incident on 26th February 1943 that led to the above two 408 Squadron aircrew receiving the DFM and DFC respectively. There's a short description of their actions on the 6 Group website: S/Ldr E. Gilmore was hit by flak, there were many holes in the fuselage and the wings, and the astro-dome was blown off. 3 engines quit for some time. They landed safely at Manston. Basically they flew home with a plane full of holes, with one engine minus its propeller, and they had no charts, with Sgt Smith using the bomb sight compass to navigate home. Specifically, is it possible to identify the actual aircraft they were flying on that night? Any help would be most gratefully received! Regards Simon |
