Allied bombing of german airfield in greece

Hi all,

I came across a picture of a burial of at least 10 (Luftwaffe?) personnnel at the german cemetery of Piraeus somewhere in November 1943. My guess is that they were killed during an Allied bomb raid.

Does anyone have a list of these raids and can compare it with a list of german losses in personnel?

Thanks in advance,
Rudi.

Re: Allied bombing of german airfield in greece

I have in my hands a greek historical magazine (Peiraika, January 2003) that is dedicated to the bomb raids against Piraeus.
During the WWII Piraeus suffered two major bomb raids. The first one (german) was that of the 6/4/1941 with the explosion of the british ship Glen Fraser and the second one (allies) was that of 11/1/1944.
In the second one the city of Piraeus counted about 700 dead.As for the Germans they had 10 men dead , 6 wounded and 3 missing. The Italians had 4 dead and 43 wounded. I don't have further information about the names of the German soldiers but at least you can be sure about the date of their death.

Hope this helps.

Tasos

Just now I remember that I have a part of the Kriegtagebuch of Seeko Attika. I attach the document about the incident. It is strange that in that document the number of the dead German is 12!

Rudi -

If you are absolutely sure the November 1943 date is correct, then the men could have been victims of one of the numerous November-December 1943 Allied attacks on airfields and other infrastructure in the Athens-Piraeus area. You can go to this web site and find all of these attacks:
