Australians in RAF 6/6/44-8/5/45
I'm trying to identify all the Australians in the RAF who served operationally with Fighter Command/ADGB/2nd TAF/100 Group in the UK/Europe during the period indicated. My list thus far...
W/C DFB Sheen (39474): CO 148 Airfield/Wing W/C William Pitt-Brown (33348): CO 174 Sqn; W/C Flying 121 Wing W/C George Howden (39738): CO 68 Sqn S/L JR Cock (40674): 3 Sqn (supernumerary) S/L FAO Gaze (60096): F/Cdr 610, 41, 616 Sqns S/L HB Martin (68795): F/Cdr 515 Sqn F/L JD Peterkin (77123): 141 Sqn (pilot) Not sure if Sheen was doing any operational flying during this period, so feel free to enlighten me. Also, I'm not sure if Pitt-Brown identified himself as Australian, but he was Australian-born and had an Aussie father. Any help would be appreciated. Bruce |

Re: Australians in RAF 6/6/44-8/5/45
Hello Bruce
You have a very large search to find all Australians who served in the RAF between D-Day and VE-Day - and although you have not mentioned Australians in the RAAF serving in RAF or RAAF units a good source would be the book "Defeat to Victory" the story of 453 Squadron RAAF - written by John Bennett - part of the RAAF Museum Heritage series ISBN 0642197857 - Published 1994. Hope this helps Allan

Re: Australians in RAF 6/6/44-8/5/45
Thanks for your efforts Laurent, but your list is of RAAF aircrew serving with RAF and RAAF squadrons, whereas I'm after Australian aircrew enlisted in the RAF serving with RAF or RAAF units. I hope you can understand the distinction!
Allan: there is a file at the NAA that lists RAAF aircrew serving with RAF squadrons during the period indicated, which was the feature of a previous thread. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=30425 Cheers, Bruce |

Hi Bruce,
Feel free to use the listing I sent you. Do a CTRL-F search of the keyword "Australian" from 6.6.44 onward. Nick |

I too am a bit confused-I take it you are not interested in enlisted RAAF aircrew, serving with the RAF (under the Empire Training Scheme) and flying with the RAF squadrons. berkyboy |

Thanks for the responses and suggestions. I'll keep an eye out for those books.
I have a few more names, and will add these as time permits. Here's a start: S/L JHM Chisholm (39652): F/Cdr 157 Sqn www.swannington-norfolk.co.uk/index-page16.html Cheers, Bruce Last edited by BruceMk11; 1st October 2012 at 15:14. Reason: Extra info |
